Midwifery

Why did you become a midwife…

Many people become a midwife due to a personal experience that drives a deep passion to provide a high level of care that enables informed decision making and empowered birth and breastfeeding experiences.

Unfortunately, many midwives express frustrations when they enter “the system” and struggle to keep their goals alive in this environment. It can be difficult to know how to navigate keeping your passion for midwifery alive whilst gaining the much needed experience that comes from being within a rigid system.

How to keep your passion for midwifery alive...

I am passionate about supporting midwives to keep your passion alive, grow and firm up the skills gained through your midwifery experiences, and keep your heart soft.

I have worked in most settings in Western Australia both clinically, in management, in policy development, in obstetric emergency management and midwifery education.

I am committed to keeping the passion of midwifery alive for the midwife and would love to offer you emotional and practical support to keep your passion alive.

As a part of signing up you will have access to bimonthly online group sessions, monthly one on one online mentor sessions and access to 24/7 midwifery support.

You’ve made the decision to become an Endorsed Midwife - where to now….

In Australia, midwives are able to work to their full scope through gaining advanced qualifications that enable them to be “endorsed”. This endorsement enables a midwife to have a Medicare provider number and a prescriber number. This then means that we are then able offer medicare rebates for the care we provide; and refer women for ultrasounds and diagnostic screening tests. The prescriber number enables midwives to prescribe medications related to their scope of practice.

The pathway to becoming a midwife with an endorsement and then setting up your own practice can feel daunting. I have been recognised as an Endorsed Midwife since 2014, when endorsement first became an exciting possibility. Things you will need to navigate include but are not limited to:

• The pathway to becoming recognised as an “Endorsed” Midwife through AHRPA. And then once you are Endorsed....

• Insurance

• Collaborative agreements

• Becoming credentialed at your chosen hospital/s to enable you to provide clinical care to your women birthing at hospital.

• Small business ins and outs ie logo, webpage, social media, client information and admin, accounts

• Documentation

• Medicare Provider and Prescriber number

• Sourcing and deciding on equipment

I would love to support you on your journey to become an Endorsed Midwife working in Private Practice. For more information click here
